On Monday, I suggested to Elayne that I was thinking that it might be interesting to volunteer to work in a charity shop. I was thinking that I would later in the year, say around late September. Time to give us both a chance to get used to the idea.
Elayne went and did her Tuesday afternoon slot, and as usual, I picked her up in town. As she got in the car, she announced as casual as you please that she had spoken to Crisha, the manager of the shop, about my starting, and would I like to go in this Friday for a chat?
Knock me over with a feather? The softest, most gentle feather from an Eiderduck would have sent me flying. This I was not expecting. Anyway, today I went into the shop for a chat, and it looks like I’m starting next Friday. Would you believe it, I barely can.
So, what is the interest in volunteering all of a sudden? Well, I’m going to be completely honest. The British Heart Foundation Shop in Gosport, for a charity shop, had by far the best book section of any shop in town, including The Works. I was really quite upset when it closed, but there was little I could do about it.
Or was there? I admit that it may take me a bit of time to get settled in and to work out what I might be allowed to do, but I admit my main interest will be the books. First, though, I’m going to watch things. Who buys books? What type are they, regular book buyers? How easy do they find it to search for books? How much effort are they prepared to put into hunting for a book? Once I have some data, I may be able to push for extra space for books.
who knows where this may go.
