The top two images are the moisture level and temperature of West, and the bottom two apply to Mid. Don’t forget that I’ve named the compost bins so that I easily know which one I am talking about. West is so called simply because it is a few yards further west than Mid, called that because it is in the middle, between our two sheds. We don’t have a third bin, so there is no East.
I’m very surprised to find that ChatGPT is quite relaxed about this, and is talking in terms of Cold Composting, which is the contents rotting down of its own accord (that really is a massive over-simplification). Cold composting may be absolutely fine, but so far, it is much less interesting than when it is hot. Because in my mind, hot means bugs and slow worms.
I think I have to set these pictures as the baseline. I haven’t been very good at establishing that. I took some pictures a few days ago, but I can’t find them – I didn’t think I had deleted them, so I’ve no idea where they’ve gone.
So temperatures are cold in both, but west is much drier than Mid, which I think if it keeps rying out, could lead to being more inviting to insects.
From the looks of it, Mid is so wet as to be almost saturated. Being a bit squeamish about dirt, I’m definitely not going to stick my hand in, as suggested by ChatGPT.
