2020 – Stargazing

I’ve just realised that I haven’t done a post about the last u3a Stargazing session. We held it a bit later than usual as it was affected by a bank holiday.

Partly because of the late session, it was a couple down on numbers, but we still had a very good discussion. That covered a range of topics. I spoke about last months mini-task of looking at asterisms. These are Stellar patterns within. Existing constellations (I’m sure I’ve blogged about this recently, apologies for the repetition), really good examples of this are Orion’s Belt, and the greater and lesser Ploughs (each part of the greater and lesser Bears).

For this month, I set myself the task at looking at each of the starred events in the calendar of the the stargazing book that we use a lot. An example of that is from last night, the 9th I really wanted to see what was a very close conjunction of Venus & Jupiter. Whilst with a bit of white, I could have got a good clear western horizon, unfortunately it was cloudy, so I lost that chance, which was annoying.

I can’t tell you what the next observation is supposed to be as I don’t have access to the book at the moment, so I’m hoping that I haven’t missed another.

I’ll let you know how I’m getting on.

I just want to write, but I prefer to stay away from controversial topics like politics. I am happy to confess that at the moment, I am writing for me. If you enjoy my writings, and I hope you do then that is all the better.
