1967 – Out and About in Gosport

In yesterdays post, number 1966, I wrote about a concern that I hadn’t had an adventure on Thursday, and therefore didn’t have much to put into yesterday’s post (I was wrong as it happened) but that is on complete contrast to today.

After breakfast I went up to The Shed, as I was hoping to carry on with the database work.  Unfortunately, the membership secretary wasn’t in, so I couldn’t.  What was surprising was how quickly people think that because I was sat at the computer I had some authority.  I was asked to generate a list of specific people, but had to explain that I couldn’t as I didn’t have a login.  I ended up staying at the shed for around an hour and a half.

I only had to wait a few minutes for the bus, taking it to the termination point at The Gosport Interchange.

I did have a bit of a plan in mind to walk along the waterfront.  You really couldn’t avoid the activity in the People’s Park.  There is now a structure that I think is going to be the base of the Band Stand, and a lot of other work.  Elayne is convinced that it is just going to be developed into a grassed area as the council has supposedly run out of money.  I have to say, it doesn’t look like it, and I am reserving judgement.

Luckily, it has been a lovely day today, so I didn’t have to wear a coat.  A very pleasant stroll along the waterfront.  There wasn’t much going on, just some small boats moving, but I did notice the Whitchallenger, one of the bunkering ships, moored at the linkspan pontoon.

Heading over towards Trinity Church. I was walkiing towards a traffic warden, and having exchanged pleasantries, we somehow got involved in a chat.  He got round to telling me about one of his great-great relations who got married in Trinity church in the 1860s,, how another relation of his had been a crewman on the USS Serpentine, which had been impounded by the Turks at the beginning of WW1, and resukted in not only having a relaxed war, but also meeting a Turkish lady whom he married and took back to USA.  Strangely, I have not been able to find out anything at all about The Serpentine.

The other thing the Traffic Warden told me about was the White Fleet.  Which was genuine.  It was a group of American Warships that before WW1 were all painted white, symbolising that they were non-combatant, and were sent around the world, apparently for two reasons, the first to prove that the USA could project force around the globe, and secondly to try drum up business for the USA.  This is genuine, and there is information on the net.

I got very excited at The Cockle Ponds where initially I wasn’t seeing anything, but as I was walking along the long southern side there were Jellyfish.  Not very many, and not very big (the biggest I was was 1.5 – 2 inches across).  I shall keep an eye on them.

I retraced my steps back to the waterfront, and went out on what in the past I have called the Haslar Marina Pier Wall and have decided to rename to the Marina Breakwater, because of the change of ownership and name change of Haslar Marina.

I ended up having a snack and cup of tea in The Craft Cafe.  I confess that I did consider doing a Facebook Post, but it would mostly have been what I have written here.  I really don’t know what to do about FB.

Actually, the end of a very pleasant day.

I just want to write, but I prefer to stay away from controversial topics like politics. I am happy to confess that at the moment, I am writing for me. If you enjoy my writings, and I hope you do then that is all the better.
