Let’s say you are reading a book about the beginning of the last century. Village and town life was completely different to today (surprise – not). Not withstanding technology, social views and awareness (in some cases driven by technology, e.g. DNA) are completely different.
Familiarity with cameras would have been non-existent, therefore the attitude to having a picture taken would be different, I would suggest possibly easier with less suspicion? Where am I going with this? Well, there’s an innocence in those 1900’s pictures that almost can’t exist today.
I’ve got a couple of books about Gosport, that have those kinds of pictures. What I would really like to do is recreate those pictures. I suppose not recreate those pictures as they were, but their equivalents today. But I think that might need a bit of planning; shopkeepers behind counters, men relaxing having a cigarette outside the snooker hall (I asked for their OK to take the picture). Perhaps I should go through one of the books, identify the different types of picture and occupation and see if I could re-create them?
So, that’s another project to even think about. Can’t see it ever coming to anything, so why would I even consider bothering? Perhaps it’s another reading / writing project? Who knows.
