1775 – Whitely

We went to Whitely this morning. Partly to get out of the house, but mainly because I need a new pair of casual shoes. As it happens one particular shop met those needs.

The shopping centre at whitely seems smaller than what I remember. /i have to admit, that my tendency has been towards not going there, as mainly, there’s nothing that interests me.

At least, that was a case until a branch of Waterstones opened there. Now, I am happy to go because I can alwaays spend a bit of time there having a browse. One thing I was surprised and pleased about, was that the shop was busy. I mean not just people in having a browse,, there was a queue to buy books, and evgerybody seemed so cheerful.

Now, there were two books that caught my attention; One was The Hidden Seasons by Tristan Gooley, which having had a flick through, does look quite interesting. The other was A Year with Gilbert White by Jenny Uglow, which looks more interesting every time I look at it, I am very tempted to buy, but at £25 as a hardcover, even with the £3 off deal by Waterstones, still seems a bit expensive. i note the Amazon price is £19, but I am still inclined to wait until the paperback v ersion comes out before even considering buying.

Elayne was happy to casrry on browsing, but my needs met, I was happy to go back to the car and wait.

Storm Amy has been blowing a bit – only a few spots of rain today. But the sea was rough, every wave on the Solent had a white top, with a bit of spray coming up on Stokes Bay. We stopped and took a few pictures.

1774 – Saturday & The Weather

Storm Amy is blowing its path across the country.

I had to go out and check the car. It wasn’t heavy rain a fine drizzle and the wind was blowing well. It’s the first storm of Autumn (not necessarily across the year.

It wasn’t that unpleasant out, and I was reminded that given the right coat. I quite like being out & walking in rough weather.

Should think about that.

1772 – Memories

I had planned to go for a walk this morning, but circumstances (of my own making) determined that the walk wouldn’t happen. Which was even more frustrating as it being not only the 1st of October, but also the first Wednesday of the month meant that, had I gone for the walk, I could have had a McDonalds Breakfast wrap. As I didn’t go for a walk, I ordered one in! I was not going to be done out of my breakfast wrap! Very nice it was as well.

There are times when I can be a bit slow on the uptake, but I think 5 years is pushing it a bit. What brought that on you might ask? Well, Facebook has this thing of posting memories from years ago. This evening’s memory was a post I did in 2020, I think it was just after Covid Started winding down. It was a post that included a day out of Fantasy Holiday – the round the world cruise. Of course it was a piece of pure fiction. Something which I really don’t enjoy writing, and which during my time writing it, I had excellent fun. Two entirely contrary positions, to a stance I normally take. Not only do I not like writing fiction, but I can’t – now, don’t get me wrong, I am by no means saying my fantasy holidays were great works. Of course they weren’t. But, I not only did it. I enjoyed it.

So much that I might seriously consider doing another one, but where would I go? It would certainly give me something to write about on FB, when for what ever reason,, I don’t have any journalling material. I shall give this some serious consideration.

1771 – Camera Club

We’ve had a very pleasant evening in the camera club. Apart from taking in prints for next weeks competition, the first of the new season, we were also asked to bring in prints for us to talk about as a club.

The header picture is one of two that I took in, and it was put up for comment. I did brief introduction talking about how and why I took it, and the fact that I really quite like black & white photography.

The. Club members were very kindly, quite complimentary with one person who is a registered judge being especially complimentary.

We also had a bit of a discussion for potential topics for members evenings, and there was quite a suggestion with several good suggestions. We’ll have to see what comes out of that.

It was a very pleasant evening.

1773 – Books

My reading recently has been a bit all over the place. When we were in Pagham, I took the opportunity to pop into Heygates Bookshop in the Railway Station, a very nice 2nd hand Bookshop that is always a pleasure to have a browse.

The last time I was there is quite memorable – it was the week in 2022, when The Queen was laying in state. I chatted to the owner about it and said that we had debated going to London to pay our respects, but decided not to. He had gone and had been lucky enough to be fairly early in the queue.

I had a browse, and reminded him of a conversation we’d had that week, when I told him about a book that I had been looking for since my early years. It’s a science fiction, I can’t remember the title, author or publisher, and only basic details of the plot;

A young lad who is training to be a chemist, is on board a spaceship that is approaching the speed of light (quoted in the book as 186,282.42 miles per second – I don’t know why that particular detail stays with me, other than I was / am an SF enthusiast). These ships have been disappearing, but nobody knows why. I think that (this is where memories of the plot become a very thin mist) he has a theory, and gets on board one of the ships. He works out what’s happening; as the ships approach the speed of light, people start aging rapidly. Ships are vanishing, because crews are dying. He eventually works out a chemical solution and saves a crew (the solution has a number, something like 4732) – and that’s it, as much as I can remember. If my lovely reader out there has any idea which book I’m talking about – I’d be delighted to hear from you.

I asked the bookshop owner if his search techniques had improved since my last visit what with AI and the like. Whilst I continued browsing, he did a litttle digging and came up with three titles;

  • Tau 0 – Poul Anderson – First published in 1970, which I think is a bit late. I’m sure I read the book before then. The science in the book is still valid, but I could never get into Poul Anderson as an author.
  • Time for the stars Robert A Heinlein – I’ve read a few of his books, Space Cadet sticks in my mind. Looking at the plot line, I really don’t think this is it – but I’ll see if I can find a copy.
  • To The Stars L. Ron Hubbard – I’ve read a few of his as well. Again from the plot, I don’t think this is the one, but I will have a read if I can find a copy.

OK, it’s way past my bed time, so I’ll say goodnight.

1772 – The Week Ahead

Posted this picture for no other reason than I like trains.

I’m sorry it has been a poor weekend for posting. I haven’t been out of the house since Thursday and probably won’t go tomorrow as I am already feeling extra tired. Tuesday though, I will try and hopefull Wednesday as well. Weather dependent of course.

This week will see us move in to October. This will be a significant month for me – I’ll write about that later. In the meantime, I will be hoping to catch up on activity on the high street and especially what is happening at the bus station.

I’m fed up that I only did one Facebook Post last week. We’ll have to see how that goes.

Let’s see how the week develops.

1771 – What I didn’t do today (or won’t tomorrow).

We had aweekend planned out. This morning, I was going to go over to GunWharf, a bit unuusal for me unless it’s five guys or the cinema, but this time I need to buy a new pair of trainers, my old ones have been consigned to the bin. I’ve pretty much stopped having pain in my heel, and leg. It’s amazing how much damage a bad pair of shoes can do.

Afterwards, Elayne and I were going to go to Whitely, I was dropping Elayne off at a social event, and going into the shopping area. I was going to have a bit of a browse in Waterstones and then head up to the cinema to see if Downton Abbey, The Grand Finale is still on. Even though I’ve only seen it a week ago, I want to see it again.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, that’s not happening. Also, tomorrow is the camera club walk. Now this is an opportunity to walk in a different part of the country with friends, take some pictures and learn about things, all followed up by a lovely meal in a pub. Unfortunately, I have certain requirements that I don’t think can be met, so we’ve decided to back out of the walk.

All a bit frustrating really, but there you go.

1770 – Frustration

From yesterday’s post, you gather that I’ve been under the weather. All I’ll say is yesterday was very unpleasant today, less so but has been painful.

The frustration comes from an online report by a local newspaper on the demolition of the bus station, which is now progressing apace.

I really wanted to give a running commentary on the project. But there’s the whole development ahead. I’ll get as much of it as I can.
