I’m supposed to be reading the Gilbert White letters. I’m starting at the beginning, with letter 1, rather than working on the dates of the letters. Apparently, he was a bit more subtle than that, as I thought I should. So, I have the delight of reading this Afternoon.
I am disappointed that I didn’t get a picture of the flight of geese that came over St Vincents as I was walking to the shed. I reckon that there were 100+ geese. What was lovely was to hear them all talking. I can imagine conversations that would be going on.
What at was interesting was the initial uncertainty of the flight as to where to settle for the day. They circled around the Spring Garden sports field and the Forton Creek areas, making up their mind. Finally deciding on the creek, the flight then started breaking up into groups of five or six geese, I couldn’t help thinking in terms of families, deciding where they were going to settle.
I mentioned that I was walking up to the shed. It was cold. Enough that I had to put my gloves on, and wished I had worn a thicker coat.
So it’s getting near the end of this morning for the shed. I think I’m going to go home, and then possibly a walk into town this afternoon with the new camera set up and take a few pictures there.
Well, this is finishing off the day. When I lefft the shed, I found that geese had all left Forton Creek and had moved on to a local field. I hadn’t noticed the magpie and gull outlayers when I took the picture. I wonder what they were waiting for? It didn’t seem like the pickings would be that rich.
I didn’t go into town, I spent a good part of the afternoon putting up the new weatherstation. The additional mounting pole and the bracket on the station have extended the height by a good three feet, well above the budlia that sometimes blocked the old station. But the pole is quite unstable and off-vertical, mainly because the base is not appropriate for it’s intended purpose. I think I may have to give the Ace of Spades owner (our regular building person) a technical engineering problem.
Oh, and I haven’t read Gilbert’s Letter No. 1 – too tired now. I’ll do that tomorrow.
