Today we had a bit of a trip out to Chichester. We like going there. I can see a similairty in some respects in the atmosphere, if not the layout of the town and Dorchester. Quite a few small shops, usually something going on in the town centre and a fair bit of History.
Chichester’s history started with the arrival of the Romans in 43 AD. It doesn’t appear to have been a major settlement before then. I think it was its proximity to the sea that helped establish it as an important location for the Romans, and its importance can be seen at Fishbourne where there is an excellent exhibition of the remains of the once magnificent Roman Villa that once stood there. It is well worth a visit.
We weren’t there for the history today though. Mostly we we wanted to have a look at bookshops and have lunch out, which we did at Wetherspoons, and very nice it was as well.
Down South Street aways is a secondhand bookshop, thousands of books crammed into three rather creaky floors. It’s always good for a browse. I bought a book, which I was very excited to find, by Arthur Mee. I was a tad disappointed when I got home, to find I already had it. The annoying thing was I already had it. I knew I had one of his books. I flicked through the one I bought today, and it looked different – my fault for not having fully read the first one I bought.
The town was quite busy with people, but we had no problem getting a tab le in Wetherspoons, and we thoroughly enjoyed the chicken strips with the honey glaze, very tasty.
We had a good browse in Waterstones but didn’t buy anything. enjoyed the day out though, and I must to my shame confess that it has been really nice to have something different to write about.
